The real story behind Pepe's BBQ — a $150 first day, menus in mailboxes, a father-son beginning, and 300+ free lunches when our community needed us most. We were in a small, 600-square-foot location that used to be Jersey Deli. We opened the doors at 11 a.m. and stayed until 10 at night. By the end of that first day, we had barely made $150.

It was just me and my dad, and I didn't know much about running a restaurant. Before Pepe's, I had mostly worked in retail — eventually higher-end retail. Washing dishes, mopping floors, cooking chicken and spending twelve-hour days inside a small kitchen definitely wasn't what I imagined myself doing.

But when you're hungry, things change fast. I quit my job, opened Pepe's with my dad, and the rest became a journey none of us could have predicted.

The early years were hard. There were plenty of days when we couldn't make ends meet. The realities of owning a small business came fast — payroll, taxes, insurance, workers' compensation, rent, food costs — while some twelve-hour days still meant only a few hundred dollars in sales.

We didn't have money for advertising. I remember bribing some of my friends with ribs so they would walk around neighborhoods with me dropping menus in mailboxes. We couldn't afford to mail them, but we had to get the word out somehow.

One time, I went over to Essex Green putting menus on cars. Then it rained. One of those menus ended up stuck all over somebody's car, and I had to get the guy a car wash.

Those were crazy days. But those were also the days that built Pepe's.

Eventually, my father stepped away from the business, and my mom and I continued the journey together. We kept learning, making mistakes, fixing them, and believing that the recipes, the food and this little restaurant had more potential than what people could see at the time.

There were plenty of moments when walking away would have been easier. We didn't.

Then came COVID. Luego llegó el COVID.

Like so many other small businesses, we had no idea what the future held. Businesses were closing everywhere, families were scared, and nobody knew how long any of it would last.

At the same time, we realized something else was happening. With schools closed, some children no longer had access to the free lunches their families depended on.

So we decided to help.

Así que decidimos ayudar.

We made one simple Facebook post offering free lunches to K–12 students whose families needed a hand. No advertising campaign, no big social media push, no strategy. We just felt that if we had food and there were kids who needed lunch, we should do something.

But something happened that we never expected. The community showed up for us too. People started making donations so we could keep feeding the kids. Customers came in to support the restaurant. People who had never heard of Pepe's before reached out and trusted us with their catering business because they had heard what we were doing.

It was never meant to be a gimmick or a clever way to get attention. We were simply trying to help. And during one of the most uncertain moments in our history, the same community we were trying to support helped keep our doors open.

That experience changed the way I looked at Pepe's. A restaurant can be more than somewhere people go to eat. It can become part of a neighborhood, part of a family's routine, and part of a community that looks after one another when things get difficult. That relationship is a big part of why we are still here today.

When we look at Pepe's now, we don't just see a restaurant. We see that first $150 day. We see the 600-square-foot shop. The menus we handed out ourselves. The dishes we washed. The floors we mopped. The chickens we cooked. The bills we worried about. The families we fed. And the customers who stood behind us when we needed them most.

Pepe's BBQ was built on family, food, hustle, perseverance and community. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who has been part of that journey — and after everything it took to get here, we're still just getting started.
